ATAK was established by Keiichiro Shibuya in 2002 as a collective including creators from various fields, such as music, design and fashion. As a music label ATAK releases Japanese and international cutting edge electro-acoustic works. The work of ATAK is deeply influenced by the music of Pan sonic and Yasunao Tone.

Shibuya released his first solo album entitled “ATAK000 keiichiro shibuya” in 2004. With an extremely dense and rich sound, focusing on tone and rhythm the album was a milestone for Shibuya’s musical development.

Pan sonic was formed in 1992 in Turku, Finland by Mika Vainio (1963) and Ilpo Väisänen (1963). Pan sonic released more than ten albums, a slew of EPs and a DVD, and have collaborated with legends such as Alan Vega, Barry Adamson and David Cunningham. The group has become one of the best known Finnish electronic music groups, renown for their harshly minimalist, high volume live performances. Pan sonic’s concert with ATAK is one of few appearances in 2009.

Yasunao Tone was born in Tokyo in 1935 and resides in New York since 1972. He is co-founder of Group Ongaku, an original member of the Japanese Fluxus movement, and a legend in electronic music. Tone will perform his piece Paramedia Mix 08 which is an instance of his long term musical project dedicated to the exploratory use of manipulated CDs. Since the 80ies Tone develops his unique musical aesthetic, based on scratched CDs and their use as a medium for live performances.

evala is a sound artist based in Tokyo and a regular member of ATAK. In 2004 he founded the independent label “port”. His first album “initial” with its strong and sensitive sounds had a great impact on the electronic music scene in Japan. evala’s signature style is an uncompromisingly artificial editing process of field recorded material. For ATAK NIGHT 4 he will also program the visuals for Shibuya’s live set.

ATAK NIGHT 4 is a project of ATAK, Les Jardins des Pilotes, and club transmediale.
Supported by the Japan Foundation.

We are pleased to announce the first volume of the edition jardins des pilotes: “a very sonic membrane - filmachine by Keiichiro Shibuya and Takashi Ikegami”, published on the occasion of the presentation of the sound installation “filmachine” in Berlin, February 2008.

Riekeles S., Broeckmann A.: "a very sonic membrane, filmachine by Keiichiro Shibuya and Takashi Ikegami", edition jardins des pilotes, diaphanes Berlin, 2008.

This book offers reflections and discussions about ›filmachine‹, a groundbreaking work of art that challenges the way we think of music, sound, and space. filmachine is a vortex of sound and light. It is a sound installation by Japanese composer Keiichiro Shibuya and complex systems scientist Takashi Ikegami. Three circles of loudspeakers are suspended from the ceiling above an abstract landscape. A delicate composition of space and time gives rise to an imaginary aural space in which sound objects and sound membranes are circulating, at times within an intimate proximity, at other times at a great distance.

The essays in this volume offer insights into a unique dialogue between art and science. With contributions by Alva Noë, Otto E. Rössler, Kazunao Abe, Keiichiro Shibuya, Takashi Ikegami, and an introductory essay by Andreas Broeckmann and Stefan Riekeles.

The book is available directly from diaphanes now.
